Modifican an toda la oración. Hay 3 grupos: a) «actually» (= «in fact«/»really«), «apparently,» «certainly,» «clearly,» «evidently,» «obviously,» «presumably,» «probably,» «undoubtedly«; b) «definitely«; c) «perhaps,» «possibly,» «surely.»

1. He is obviously intelligent. They certainly work hard; He actually lives next door. They have presumably sold their house. Apparently he knew the town well; He knew the town well apparently. Surely you could pay L1? You could pay L1, surely? He was certainly there; there is no doubt about it. Suely he was there.

[Los adverbios del grupo a) se colocan a continuación de «be» («He is obviously intelligent»); delante de los tiempos simples de otros verbos («He actually lives next door»); tras el primer auxiliar de un verbo compuesto («They have presumably sold their house») o en posición inicial o final («Apparently he knew the town well»; «He knew the town well apparently»). En el grupo b) «definitely» se usa en las posiciones de arriba, pero no en posición inicial. En c) «perhaps» y «possibly» se usan sobre todo en posición inicial y ocasionalmente en posición final. «surely,» en posición inicial o final y ocasionalmente junto al verbo. Los adjetivos «sure» y «certain» son sinónimos, los adverbios tienen significados distintos. «certainly» equivale a «definitely» («He was certainly there; there is no doubt about it»); «surely» indica que el hablante no está completamente seguro de que el enunciado que sigue es verdadero: piensa que lo es pero quiere confirmarlo («Sure he was there?)]

2. Honestly, Tom didn’t get the money (adverbio de frase). Tom didn’t get the money honestly (adverbio de modo).

[«admittedly,» «(un)fortunately,» «frankly,» «honestly,»* (un)luckily,» «naturally,»* «officially;»* etc. se colocan en posición inicial, aunque la posición final es posible. Normalmente están separados del resto de la frase por coma. Los adverbios marcados con asterisco (*) pueden ser también adverbios de modo.]
