Verbos ordinarios: las formas negativas de los tiempos

1. El presente simple:

• 3ª persona del singular does not / doesn’t + infinitivo
• Otras personas: do not / don’t + infinitivo

El Pasado simple negativo para todas las personas: did not / didn’t + infinitivo

Las contracciones son habituales en la lengua hablada («contractions are usual in speech»):

• He does not answer letters / He doesn’t answer letters.
• They do not live here / They don’t live here.
• I did not phone her / I didn’t phone her
• She did not wait for me / She didn’t wait for me

Las negativas de todos los demás tiempos se forman poniendo not delante del auxiliar:

Las contracciones son usuales en la lengua hablada («Contractions are usual in speech»):

• He has not finished / He hasn’t finished.
• He would not come / He wouldn’t come.

2. Contracciones negativas:

Los auxiliares be, have, will, would, shall, should, do so contraen como se indica:

am not > ‘m not; is not > isn’t o s’not; are not > aren’t o ‘re not.

• I’m not going and Tom isn’t going / I’m not going and Tom’s not going.
• We aren’t going /We’re not going.

have not y has not contraen en haven’t y hasn’t, pero en los tiempos de perecto ‘ve not y hasn’t son tambien posibles:

• We haven’t seen him / We’ve not seen it.
• He hasn’t yet come / He’s not come yet.

will not contrae en won’t, aunque ‘ll not es también posible. shall not contrae en shan’t:

• I won’t go / I’ll not go till I hear and I shan’t hear til tomorrow.

Otras formas verbales contraen de la manera usual añadiendo n’t

Las contracciones negativas pueden aparecer al final de una oración:

• I saw it but he didn’t.

3. En inglés una oración negativa puede tener una sola expresión negativa en ella. Dos expresiones negativas dan a la oración un sentido afirmativo: «Nobody did nothing» means that «everyone did something.»

Así, never, no (adjetivo), none, nobody, no one, nothing, hardly, hardly ever etc. se usan con un verbo afirmativo. Podemos decir:

• He didn’t eat anything / He ate nothing.
• He hardly ever complains / He never complains.
• We haven’t seen anyone / We have seen no one
• They didn’t speak much / They hardly spoke at all / They hardly ever spoke.
