«need»: formas

[A] need puede ser un verbo auxiliar y un verbo ordinario. 

Como auxiliar es un «semi-modal,» i.e. tiene formas modales y formas de verbo ordinario. Como modal, se conjuga «need» o «need not»/»needn’t» para todas las personas en el presente y el futuro, y en estilo indirecto (Ver [C] abajo.)

INTERROGATIVA NEGATIVA: need I not?/needn’t I? etc.

need conjugado como arriba toma el infinitivo sin «to.»

[B] need auxiliar no se usa en oraciones afirmativas, excepto cuando una oración negativa o interrogativa es precedida por una expresión que cambia el verbo negativo o interrogativo en un verbo afirmativo:

• «I needn’t wear a coat,» o bien: «I don’t suppose I need wear a coat.»
• «Need I tell Tom?», o bien: «Do you think I need tell Tom?» 

También puede usarse, en Inglés muy formal con «hardly»/»scarcely» u «only»:

• I need hardly say how pleased we are to welcome Mr X. («I needn’t say …»)
• You need only touch one of the pictures for all the alarm bells to start ringing. (If you even touch one of the pictures all the bells …)

[C] «needn’t» en estilo directo es reproducido sin cambio alguno en estilo indirecto:

• «You needn’t pay till the 31st» he says/said = He says/said I needn’t pay till the 31st.

[D] need también puede conjugarse como un verbo ordinario.

need conjugado de esta forma, con will/shall, do/does/did etc., toma el infinitivo con «to» y a veces se hace referencia a él como need to.
