«if only»

only puede ir colocado después de if e indica esperanza, un deseo o arrepentimiento, según el tiempo usado con if only.

[A] if only + presente/will expresa esperanza:

• If only he comes in time = We hope he will come in time.
• If only he will listen to her = We hope he will be willing to listen to her. 

[B] if only + pasado/pretérito pluscuamperfecto expresa arrepentimiento (ver también wish + pasado/pretérito pluscuamperfecto, más adelante):

• If only he didn’t smoke! = We wish he didn’t smoke, o bien: We are sorry he smokes.
• If only (=I/We wish) Tom were here!
• If only you hadn’t said «Liar»! = We wish you hadn’t said, «Liar»/We are sorry you said, «Liar».

[C] if only + would puede expresar arrepentimiento por una acción presente como alternativa a if only + pasado (tiene el mismo significado wish + would):

• If only he would drive more slowly! =

= We are sorry that he isn’t willing to drive more slowly

o bien un deseo no muy esperanzado concerniente al futuro:

• If only (=I/We wish) the rain would stop! (No esperamos realmente que la lluvia pare.)

Las cláusulas if only pueden aparecer solas como arriba o formar parte de una oración condicional completa.
