[A] Los hábitos en el presente se expresan normalmente por medio del presente simple; pero puede usarse en su lugar will + infinitivo cuando queremos subrayar las características de la persona a cuyo hábito nos referimos más que el hábito en sí. Se emplea en afirmaciones de caracter general:
- An Englishman will usually show you the way in the street. (Es normal para un Inglés actuar de esta manera.)
No es un uso muy importante de will, pero la forma de pasado, would, tiene un empleo mucho más amplio y puede reemplazar a used to para describir una rutina pasada:
- On Sundays he used to/would get up early and go fishing. He used to/would spend the whole day by the river and in the evening used to/would come home with marvellous stories of the fish he had nearly caught.
Cuando used to hace referencia a un hábito interrumpido no puede ser reemplazado por would.
Tanto will como would pueden contraerse usados como se indica arriba.
[B] will también puede expresar insistencia obstinada, usualmente habitual:
- If you ‘will keep your watch half an hour slow it is hardly surprising that you are late for your appointments.
would se usa en el pasado:
- We all tried to stop him smoking in bed but he ‘would do it.
will y would aquí no se contraen y llevan acento fuerte.
[C] would puede expresar una acción característica, por lo general una que irrita al hablante:
- Bill objects/objected.- He ‘would!/He ‘would object! (He always objects.)
