El infinitivo usado como nexo conectivo

[A] El infinitivo se usa después de only para expresar una secuela decepcionante:

• He hurried to the house only to find that it was empty =

= He hurried to the house and was disappointed when he found that it was empty. 

– He survived the crash only to die in the desert =

= He survived the crash but died in the desert.

[B] El infinitivo puede usarse como un nexo conectivo sin only, y sin ninguna idea de infortunio:

• He returned home to learn that his daughter had just become engaged. 

Pero este uso está restringido a verbos como find, hear, learn, see, be told etc., ya que de otro modo podría haber confusion entre un infinitivo usado conectivamente y un infinitivo de finalidad.
